‘Books For Love @ $10’ Charity Sale
I recently went to the ‘Books For Love @ $10’ charity sale hosted by Books For Love and had so much fun there! The book sale took place across two weekends (May 8th-11th & May 15th-18th) and at two locations in Hong Kong: Cambridge House and Berkshire House in Quarry Bay.
This bookish event aims to encourage reading and the art of storytelling in Hong Kong through secondhand books. It is sponsored by Swire Properties and takes place annually. Every year, they receive countless numbers of books in various genres that are sorted by volunteers and the organization’s Community Ambassadors before being sold at ‘Books for Love’. Each book at the sale is worth $10, and this year there was even a ‘buy 10 get 2 free’ offer! There weren’t many books that caught my eye enough to use the offer, but I managed to get a copy of Legendborn and Gone Girl.
Several workshops and special surprises also took place at this event. I went on a day where nothing was on, but Star Wars fans had the joy of meeting some of their favourite Star Wars characters through the Hong Kong’s 501st Garrison Legion (HK’s official Star Wars cosplay group) on May 9th and a special Mother’s Day card crafting workshop was held on May 11th to celebrate the occasion. Children were invited to dress up as their favourite book characters and take part in catwalks and various games on May 11th and 18th. Several comic and illustrator guests made appearances throughout the weekend, too.
It was heart-warming and touching to witness volunteers, ambassadors, and the public coming together and share their love for reading and books with each other. I found myself meeting new people and bonding with them over our favourite books! The days for the ‘Books for Love’ event are slightly different every year, but if you’re an avid reader, a book enthusiast, or need some books to read, definitely check it out if you’re ever in Hong Kong and it’s on!
